Ever stood on a dancefloor or scrolled through tracks wondering, what is the difference between house and techno? You aren’t alone. Even as a DJ whose crates are packed with house, tech-house, nu-disco, acid house, afro-house, and techno, I admit the lines blur.

To understand electronic music definitions, you just need to look at four pillars: pace (BPM), percussion, melody, and sounds. Let’s break down the spectrum.

What genre is this electronic song?

The Electronic Music Genre Breakdown

  • Disco & Nu-Disco: (110–125 BPM) Driven by organic, soulful melodies, live basslines, and funk guitars. Nu-disco takes these vintage grooves and glues them to crisp, modern electronic production.

  • House & Funky House: (120–130 BPM) The pioneer of the 4/4 “kick” drum. House is all about a soulful groove, infectious vocal hooks, and piano chords. Funky house simply turns up the sass with heavy disco samples and brass sections.

  • Afro-House: (120–125 BPM) This style strips back the synthetic elements, leaning heavily into hypnotic tribal percussion, organic instrumentation, and African linguistic vocal chants.

  • Tech-House & Techno: Tech-house (122–128 BPM) is the perfect marriage, borrowing house’s bouncy groove and layering it with techno’s rugged, synthetic textures. True Techno (126–140+ BPM) is faster, darker, and skeletal – prioritizing raw, industrial percussion over melody.

The Sub-Genre Umbrella: From Melodic to “EDM”

As sub-genres evolve, look out for melodic house (which favours emotional, cinematic synth leads) and progressive house (built on long, atmospheric arrangements that gradually escalate).

And what about EDM? While purists argue it’s a lazy generalisation for all electronic music, it has effectively become its own commercial genre defined by mainstage, stadium-sized pop drops.

Breaking the Rules (The 2ManyDJs Effect)

While sticking to a genre vibe is great, the real magic happens when you hunt for anomalies. I’ve talked about them before slightly obsessively – but channeling the iconic 2ManyDJs (AKA Soulwax), throwing a sudden rock, metal, or pop anthem into a tech-house set creates an unforgettable shock-factor.

Don’t get paralyzed by the labels. Learn the rules, and then break them to surprise your crowd.
