Last weekend, the Royal Oak bar in Carterton hosted an epic 1990s rave-themed leaving party that felt like stepping back into the heyday of Madchester. Guests came decked out in full dayglo gear and vintage rave fashion, embracing the theme with a colorful nod to the unforgettable club nights of Cream, Studio 54, and The Hacienda. DJ Dan spun an energetic mix that kept the dance floor pulsing all night, blending everything from classic rock to electronic hits that transported the crowd back to the golden days of underground raves and club anthems.
The setlist was a carefully curated, eclectic blend that included the smooth funk of Donna Summer, the bass-heavy beats of Skrillex, and classic tracks from the Happy Mondays and Primal Scream, adding that signature 90s rave feel. Dan threw in modern electronic twists with tracks by Dom Dolla and Mr. Oizo, while also tapping into rock nostalgia with hits from Oasis, the Rolling Stones, and even the Beatles. This unexpected combination made for a truly unique experience that catered to a diverse crowd, letting everyone find something to vibe to on the dance floor, no-matter their age or music taste.
Sound quality was paramount, and DJ Dan’s equipment setup ensured that every track resonated perfectly. With 1400W Wharfdale Typon speakers, a DDJ FLX10 console, and an 800W Mackie subwoofer, the sound was immersive and crisp, delivering punchy basslines and clear mids that filled the space effortlessly. The energy was electric, and the crowd stayed energized all night, carried by a soundscape that oscillated between house beats, funky disco, and rock anthems. (In true rave-style, the local noise control officer issued us with our first ever request to “please turn down the bass”, which we duly did).
Overall, the night was a homage to the 90s rave scene, capturing the essence of an unforgettable era while keeping the spirit of the leaving celebration alive. The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia, high-energy dancing, and endless laughter-a perfect send-off for the guests of honor, before the last ever afters-party at their own micro-club, Little Cuba!
