If you’re planning a wedding, party, corporate event, birthday or live gig, one of the first questions is usually: how much does it cost to hire a sound system?
The short answer is: it depends on what you’re trying to achieve. A small system for speeches and background music is very different from a powerful PA for a DJ, band or packed dance floor.
Across New Zealand, you can find small PA systems from around $150–$250+GST, while more capable systems with subwoofers and additional equipment can cost several hundred dollars. In Wellington, active speakers commonly hire for around $65–$95 +GST per night each, while quality active subwoofers are around $80–$120 +GST each.
What about DJ decks?
You can absolutely hire DJ equipment separately. Professional Pioneer CDJ players are currently advertised around $150 per night +GST, with professional DJ mixers around $125–$150 +GST. A complete DJ setup can therefore quickly reach $300–$500 or more. In the Wairarapa, we can offer a DDJ controller for you to hire which has a mixer and DJ decks all in one – just plug in your laptop and off you go!
And what about lighting?
Party lighting can be surprisingly affordable. A basic lighting effect might cost from $50–$115, while more elaborate illuminated dance floors are generally priced by size and installation requirements.
In the Wairarapa and Wellington, the advantage of talking to a local provider is that your quote can be matched to the venue, guest numbers and type of event rather than simply choosing the biggest system available. Travel and transport costs less than a journey over the Remutaka Hill and you are nearer to the vendor if you need support.

Can you set it up for me?
Of course, we’re more than happy to set up the system; we’ve done it many times before and know all the cabling, connections, levels and settings off by heart! And if any quirks arise during the install, we’re the best people to resolve it, rather than a frustrating list of instructions over the phone.
